Post subject: What, Precisely, Is "Hunger"??
Archived from groups: sci>med>nutrition, others (more info?)

Okay, I wound up doing a liquid diet for most of this past Saturday,
and boy was I hungry all day long!

I had an A-to-Z vitamin pill, I had carbs, I had protein shakes, and I
was still hungry! So, assuming my body is getting all the nutrition it
needed -- which it was, on paper -- why was I still hungry? Quite
deeply, too, as when you feel it in your very throat! Once I had some
beef and potato stew, I was totally all right again.

So what, exactly, is hunger? Is it simply the stomach being empty? In
which case it would make sense, since a liquid diet is too quickly
absorbed. Or does the body only trigger hunger pangs when it's in need
of some nutrient?

Then there are days when, I swear, I had nothing to eat and almost
nothing to drink all day, while engaged in physically strenuous
activities, and seem not to have been hungry beyond a few seconds! And
none too often, either, at that. Weird.

It's a complex of hormonal cues.

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&ie=ISO-8859-1&q=what+makes+you+hun
gry+hormonal+control

I've found that sipping ice water or unsweetened ice tea helps to kill
hunger pangs. I use that at work all the time when I'm too busy to eat.
The hunger pangs make me nauseated if I have to ignore them long enough
otherwise.

Eliminating sugar from my diet (for the most part) helps to curb it a
lot. It's part of why complex carbs are more highly recommended for
weight loss.

There is a lot of truth to the old adages that some people live to eat
and others eat to live. What I notice is that when I am busy in some
activity, even if I might be a little hungry, I don't dwell on it. For
some reason, probably because our ancestors had to eat a lot whenever
food was available to keep from starving, we have a disconnect between
our hunger and our needs. Many people with a weight problem just have
to stay a little hungry. Besides keeping active, I think it helps to
eat those low cal, high fiber foods like green beans, almost all
vegetables really, or oatmeal or farina or grits, and drink a lot of
water or diet pop and just maintain the willpower to just say no to
additional food when you have reached your dietary allotment. If it is
any consolation, it does get a little easier on you after you make
eating the correct amount a routine. Just be aware that is is normal to
almost always want to eat more. There is a psychological and even an
evolutionary basis for this that people who tend to overeat just must
overcome. It sounds trite, but a person has to know their caloric
needs, know the exact calories in what they eat, then STOP eating when
they reach their daily allowance...even if you are still a little
hungry (or a lot hungry). dkw

Its that feeling you get when you want to eat.

When you get thirsty you want to drink.

Not necessarily. I seem to recall reading a study somewhere that indicated
that some people mistake thirst for hunger, and eat when they should drink.

That little factoid helped me more than anything else with weight
control. Smile

Dr. Kennady told me that little gem in his office one day when we were
discussing it.

more stuffage all snipped.

Hunger is a flower dying in the desert.

Similar to sweet reason and personal responsibility in these
(dis)United States.

Dying that is.

Adding to the anecdotal observations:

on a weekday when I go out to work, I'm immediately hungry, though often
an iced coffee will placate.

When I stay at home, though, I'm much less hungry overall... waiting 'til
lunch is no problem, and, though this might be a timing thing, I'm not
so hungry in the evenings either. This holds true even when my level of
physical activity is greater than what it would be going to the car,
walking to the building, climbing to the 3rd floor, etc.

So it's pretty complex and psychological. Along side the issues of bodies
generally craving Real Food.

A liquid diet won't fill your stomach for a long time, IME. You need solid
food.

We need the texture and taste of real food. Smile

It's a body and mind thing.
I am getting hungry when I read about your beef and potato stew.
I didn't get hungry for your vitamin pills and protein shake!

Classic unsubstantiated and erroneous claim, laced with invective, as
expected from someone who lacks a logical argument.

Classic lack of specificity.

Classic erroneous presupposition.

What, Precisely, Is "Hunger"??

The NORMAL state of mankind. And, yes it is largely mental.
