Hello,

I'm just getting back to a fitness regime and I'm looking to purchase
a compact fitness machine. I'm not to impressed with what's out
there. Any suggestions? Phil

To purchase? How about free? Well, kindasorta.

Look in the mirror, Phil.

One compact fitness machine at your service.

Okay, "compact" may just be a relative term. You're not 800 pounds,
are you?

Best of luck. Please post a follow-up.

Okay, what's a clip? What's a rack? What's a power rack? Does anyone
know of a site where I can buy all this? I'm going to send some of
you guys a picture of me now and again in a year so send me your email
addresses to philbarone.RemoveThis@philbarone.com. I'm one of these type A
personalities. I used to run a long time ago, I was 159 pounds, now
I'm 247 AHHHHHHHHHHH!!! I was never able to bulk up but I belonged to
a few gyms. I'm a musician and the music drove me mad. Everytime I
worked out I ended up getting angry. Damn hip hoppers.

Two dumbbell handles, four clips, twelve 10 lb plates, four 5 lb plates
and four 2.5 lb plates.

Here's the deal. What you really want is a power rack, a nice bench,
and an Olympic bar (or two) with some Olympic plates. Dumbbells are
nice too. You can get a fairly nice free weight setup for less than
$600 and you'll end up with a setup that is more functional and far
less expensive than any machine on the market. It would be one thing
if machines were worth the premium that you pay for them, but, for the
most part, they simply aren't as good as free weights.

Now, a power rack is not something that folds up and slides under your
bed, and so if you are hurting for space then you might want to
consider something else. You probably still want free weights though.
Get yourself some dumbbell handles and some plates and start there.

Seems like you've fixed that whole "never able to bulk up" problem,
Phil.

You're a drummer, I assume.

For the most part learning the lifts is fairly easy. You'll need to
learn a bit of technique so that you don't hurt yourself, but for the
most part it is all pretty straightforward. There are plenty of
places online that have example video of just about any lift you might
want to try.

Iirc, Schuh recommended you see your doctor to see if anything is
going on re your not being able to lose weight. It seems obvious to me
that your chemo may just be one variable that makes things different
for you now than they had been "in the past" as you mention above.

See your doctor about the weight loss goal.

And re your question, I'll agree with any who say you might want to
concentrate on the weight loss first.

Nothing wrong with weight training while you're dieting and doing
cardio, however. In fact, three days a week of full body workouts
should do nothing but increase your body's function as a fat-burning
machine via the increased muscle from your weight workouts.

They did.

Perhaps one an inmate was bored, and find a few lying around and started to
swing.
