Post subject: Newbie - Using a Tredmill

Hi,

I have recently decided it is time I get myself fit again.

I'm 30 yrs of age (31 Nov) and weigh 11.1 stone (70.4882 kg / 155.4 lb).
5.8 ft in height.

I don't have any known illnesses (thankfully).

I don't really get much physical exercise as I tend to go almost everywhere in my car (except at work I move about allot up and down stairs and rushing about).

I want to exercise with some advice. I have been advised to work out my resting heart rate etc. But all this is a little confusing when you don't know what to exactly do with the info and most places I read on the web leave me no more wiser Neutral

I have bought a York P12 Heart Rate Monitor. Hoping this would help me. Mainly to keep an eye on my max heart rate.

It seems very accurate and is reporting my resting rate at about 102 bpm.
Which is near enough what I count it at when doing it from pulse.

My only understanding so far is....
Max Heart Rate = 220 - age (190)
And apparently I should be exercising in the 'Healthy Zone' which is 95 - 114 bpm.

However in the Treadmill the programs will go at 6kph (jog) my heart rate rises to like 174 (more so towards end of session).
The session is for 30 mins.

I don't find the work out uncomfortable but I am concerned about doing to much and causing more harm than good.

My aim is to get physically fitter and feel the difference. Raise my energy levels and lessen my stress levels.

Any advice appreciated.

Welcome and nice to meet you. I am also wanting to lose weight but I've been at it but 4th of July holiday it all went down hill. I'm trying to get it under control again.

Unfortunately I really can't help you that much with your situation but I can tell you is that I've found if you 5-6 small meals a day and do exercise (i.e. cardio, strength training, weight lifting, etc) you will see weight loss.

Best of luck and sorry I couldn't be anymore help.

There is so much information on the web, and a lot of it is really confusing and pretty much everyone has different advice. I wouldn't worry about the heart rate of 174. My gym recommends a heart rate in this range for aerobic exercise. This is a pretty healthy place for a young person to be at. Your resting heart rate is maybe a little high, but I think overall you are doing good things for your body. I wouldn't stop the running if it isn't uncomfortable, your body typically knows you best. In fact, if you run a little faster, your heart rate probably won't go up very much, but the change in body motion will lead to a sharp increase in calorie burn, which is the key to physical fitness. Try parking a block or two away from your work, or at the far end of the parking lot. Those short walks start to add up to big changes.
