A few years back the fruit bats at Drusilla's Zoo (>
http://www.drusillas.co.uk/ ) in East Sussex got too fat and stopped
breeding. The keepers had carefully calculated the amount of food the
number of bats in the house needed, and laid it out on platforms for
them... The bats were not getting the exercise they needed for the
amount of food given. The keepoers looked at how the bats feed in the
wild, and got rid of all the platforms. Now they hang the fruit and veg
from strings all over the place, so the bats have to fly, hunt it out,
and cling on as they would in their natural environment. The bats lost
weight and started breeding again.
Exercise is good for fruit bats, monkeys, and people.
