The Beep reported on Thursday that scientists have been making muscle
in the lab, which they then implant into rats with great results!
Human trials are scheduled soon....

They do it by mixing some muscle cells with a very thin film of some
sort...they're not doing skeletal muscles, but smooth muscles such as
what make up the heart and other organs -- but can skeletal muscles be
far behind??

WOW!!! Imagine, finally -- just replace that ageing biceps with new
ones!!!

America needs a process that turns fat into muscle tissue!

up anything using the search terms "bbc muscle film rats implants
new"....

And didn't somebody else grow chicken meat in the lab or something
last year???

You're right -- I didn't mean to mention them in the same breath like
that; thanks for the correction.

Hmm! Is the brain smooth muscle? No, seriously!

I wonder if bugs or lobsters have the same kind of muscles inside
their exoskeletons....

That's the thing...the Beep reported that it did work in rats, and
that they're going to do human trials soon...I wish I could post a
link, but I heard this on the radio, and I just didn't have any luck
with the search terms "BBC muscle film implant rats"....

Heck, just find out what biochemical signals causes fat burning,
explore any safety issues involved....

Whatever happened to that electrostimulation stuff? Did it not work,
or not work very well, or had serious side-effects?

It's all in the key words... I already knew about them trying to grow
noses and ears on the backs of mice and rats for plastic surgery, so I
just typed in "ear growing on a rats back" for my google search.

If one search chain does not work, try something a bit different.

Sometimes it takes some patience to find what you want. There are
literally billions of websites.

Besides, my reply to you was meant to be funny.
Perhaps you need to transplant a sense of humor. Wink

In all seriousness, I doubt that "Muscle implants" will be useful for
body building any time soon. They are more applicable to people that
have been in serious accidents and need re-building.

On the up-side, prosthetic muscle implants have been available for years
for physique enhancement. Please note that they won't make you stronger,
just "prettier". <G>

Try here to start:

http://www.onlinesurgery.com/plasticsurgery/calf-implants.asp

There is a side bar with other procedures.

The heart isn't smooth muscle. Smooth muscle is what wraps your blood
vessels, gut, bladder, etc - it generates long, slow contractions to
maintain static pressure. If your heart was smooth muscle, it'd beat about
once every ten seconds.

The heart is cardiac muscle - something different to both smooth and
skeletal muscle, but much more similar to skeletal than smooth, in terms
of ultrastructure, regulation, etc. Smooth muscle cells are actually a lot
more similar to contractile non-muscle cells than they are to the other
muscle cells in those respects; the isoforms of myosin etc they use are
also either the same as or closely related to the non-muscle isoforms.

>> -- but can skeletal muscles be far behind??

Skeletal muscle is pretty different to smooth muscle - it has a lot more
structure, so it'll be harder to make. You can't just mix up cultured
cells and some laminin or whatever and expect it to work. But, it's
probably not impossible. The right goop, the right growth factors, maybe
some sort of microstructured scaffold ...

>> WOW!!! Imagine, finally -- just replace that ageing biceps with new

Not as absurd as you might think. Adipocytes and muscles cells are close
to each other in the family tree of cell types, so you only have to
persuade a fat cell to dedifferentiate a few steps back to a mesenchymal
stem cell (currently entirely impossible) before it's good to turn into
a muscle cell.

But then you get muscles forming in some pretty weird places. Subcutaneous
fat becoming subcutaneous muscle? Er, no thanks. Unless you can figure out
a way to make the stem cells move to the right place - like a metastasing
cancer cell. Sounds great! And they'd have to move quite some distance,
otherwise i'm going to have the most muscular arse this side of one of
Pete's wet dreams, and abs bigger than my pecs.

Man, I wish I'd have had some muscle implants before I made my flexing
video. I would have looked so hot. I would have rubbed myself down
with baby oil and worn a speeo.

I'm now thinking of getting a butt lift, for the next time I take
pictures of my own butt, I'd have something to be REALLY proud of.

Thanks for the news

I removed the picture of my butt from the website, because I
wanted to take some better ones, maybe with me inserting
some toys. For now, here are pictures I took while stalking
sunbathers here:

They do.

The simplest animals don't - jellyfish only have smooth muscle, and some
sort of hybrid epithelial-muscle cell (epithelial cells being what makes
up your skin, the lining of your gut, etc). I have no idea where in the
tree of life skeletal muscle evolved.

It may be of help to people who already have functioning muscles and
just want to build them up again, but it doesn't offer hope for those
who have permanent paralysis in that muscle..it won't help to replace
the muscle as it too would just atrophy without being hooked up to the
central nervous system.
this is just my opinion as one who lives with paralysis.
