Hi,
I am 25, 6' and 194lb/88kg. About a month ago I started a workout
programme with a view to losing about 10-15 lb of fat and gaining
muscle mass, just to look fit and a bit muscular, not like the Hulk or
anything. I've also restricted my diet to around 1800 kcals per day.
Because of work/life constraints, I can only work out 4 days,
Mon-Thurs, with Fri, Sat and Sun little or no proper exercise. Around
the weekend, my diet would be less restricted also, though I try to
remain careful enough about what I eat. I only have 1 hour each day to
work out, so it usually consists of a combination of cardio work (25
mins cross-trainer) with some machine
presses, for arms, chest and shoulders. Try to get in an hours swimming
in addition [or sometimes instead of] the workout days.
My plan is to take Creatine to promote growth in muscle mass, take
Maximuscle Thermobol capsules to keep my metabolism fast even though
I've cut down on calorie intake, take Maximuscle Fattack to minimise
the negative effects of getting home late and having a meal then [only
chance I'll get]. I also ordered a pack of Guggul complex capsules
because they came free, though I'm not really sure what benefit they
have.
I'm only stating out - so I'm wondering if this sounds reasonable?
Will it be effective? Should I concentrate more on other aspects of my
workout.
Any advice?
Cheers. >> Stay informed about: Beginner - Losing weight while gaining muscle |

| I've recently started a workout regime, like yourself I find my
timetable hard to manage, ie. eating times, workout times. However I am
thinking of taking a weight gainer (musclejuice) and i was wondering if
you find yourself gaining unwanted weight, as I do not want to gain
anymore either, I waould prefer to trim up and gain muscle mass and I
would like to know what your opinion on this is.

Pretty attainable goal and the workout timetable is okay. I assume
weekends are for gigs with a handle like you have. Is it possible to
workout on Sunday or would you just be too tired?
If you could work out Sunday I would suggest weights with basic
movements on Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday. You could do intervals and
cardio on Monday and Wednesday and possibly get some training in on
Friday.
If you look at exercises like Matt Furey's Royal Court (go to
www.cbass.com and take a look) you realize that fitting exercise in to a
tough timetable isn't all that hard.
Another way of making this work would be a split - lower body on Monday,
upper body on Tuesday, full body on Thursday and Royal Court on two or
three off days.
I'd look at exercises like squats, incline presses and rows as your
basic exercises. On the above schedule you could do squats, shrugs, leg
curls, calf raises and leg raises on Monday. Tuesday would be bench
press, rows, press, pull-up or pull downs and crunches. Thursday would
be deadlifts, incline press, leg press, cable row and leg raises.
Off days do the Royal Court and progress on reps.

First off, you are severely overweight according to the BMI. But to your
credit, you are a beginner.

I must commend you on your desire to build those sought-after "long and
lean" muscles that are in vogue as of late. I hate those unsightly "bulky"
muscles that HIT retards want to get. I once became too bulky and the guys
at the bar were making fun of my 15-inch biceps. Lower poundages and more
reps and sets is the way to go.
> I've also restricted my diet to around 1800 kcals per day.
1800 calories a day is sufficient to get yourself to look fab while at the
same time lose unsightly fat at the same time. Eventually, you should try
to get by with 1500 calories a day (to get a fabulous rippling and very
man-hot sixpack). Make sure you cut out red meats and fats and increase
your intake of wheat and other low-fat carbohydrates.

If I were you I would try to work out at least 6 days a week (take a
well-earned day off on the day of your choice). You don't want to
undertrain. Remember: the more you work out, the better. If you skip a
workout day, try to make up for it by trying to workout on your normally
scheduled off-day or increase the number of sets you do to make up for the
slack.

If you take supps, make sure that they are made by Weider--they are the
best. It's better to take supps to make up for the fact that you are
cutting out your calories.

Remember the old Chinese adage: "The journey of a thousand miles begins with
the first step".

Wrong. The only way to long and lean muscles is the Pilates Method.
Be sure to find a fully certified instructor, and don't skimp on the
cost!

Wrong again. No diet is adequate unless it comprised mostly of the
wholesome goodness of raw fruits and vegetables, combined with
life-enriching properties of tender green sprouts, the "living food." >> Stay informed about: Beginner - Losing weight while gaining muscle |

Excellent advice Tavington! If only I had your knowledge and expertise.
