I've been doing regular cardio for quite some time. If I'm not not running
3-4 miles daily, I'm riding my bike for 10-20 miles. I do this 5-6 days a
week, however, my legs just aren't responding the way I'd like them to.
They're still pretty flabby in my opinion and I *really* want to change
this. I've been drinking protein shakes for a couple of weeks and I can
feel a SLIGHT difference, but not a whole lot. I really hate weight
training, but is that what it's gonna take? Why doesn't cardio do the
trick? I'm sweating like crazy at the end of my workout!!! Can anyone
suggest something that will work??

Well, for one thing, you might not be putting much of a strain on those
muscles, despite all the time and (cardio) effort you put into it. You
really need to say more about the quality of your run and rides in
order for anyone to evaluate their effectiveness.

> They're still pretty flabby in my opinion and I *really* want to change this.

If by "flabby", you truly mean fat, you cannot target where the body
chooses to lose fat. But I wonder if some of the "flabbiness" is loose
muscle -- or even loose skin over taut muscle, if you have recently
lost lots of weight quickly.

> I've been drinking protein shakes for a couple of weeks and I can
> feel a SLIGHT difference, but not a whole lot.

Forget the protein shakes, if you have an otherwise well-balanced diet.
If you don't, concentrate on that rather than protein supplements.
I'm sure a lot of people will disagree with me on that point. But I
believe that unless you are working your muscles to failure ("ouch!"),
I suspect that you are simply excreting most of the extra protein.
Your body will use only as much protein as it needs.

> I really hate weight training, but is that what it's gonna take?

Probably. There is a lot that you can do, especially on your rides,
that could have a similar effect; for example, lots of hill-climbing or
simply emphasizing high gears. But if you cannot control the terrain
you run or ride over, you will need to get that extra resistance
training another way.

> Why doesn't cardio do the trick?

Because cardio per se targets, well, the cardio system (heart, lungs,
endurance, energy efficiency, etc). But you can certainly combine a
great cardio workout with a good muscle workout. For example, pedaling
at 90-120 RPM in your "granny gears" on level terrain will not do much
for the quads and hams. (Although that does depend on your technique.)
But doing that in our higher gears should cause quite a "burn" in the
thighs -- which is an indication that your stressing your muscles
sufficiently.

> I'm sweating like crazy at the end of my workout!!!

Footnote: The degree of sweating is not much of an indicator of
intensity of effort for cardio exercise, much less resistance training.
For example, I break into a sweat just trying to balance on one foot
(sigh).

Do those comments help at all?

I am glad you posted back with some details. I was just logging in to
say that I made a lot of ass-u-me-tion in my response that, on second
thought, I wish I had not made.

That kinda depends on what you mean by "pinching around".

If you presume that the problem is loose or weak inner/outer thigh
muscles, you might try exercises that target them. I use abductor and
adductor machines for that purpose. But there are similar exercises
that you can do with bands, Swiss ball and free weights.

> Let let the cardio fall by the way-side, though.... it kinda gives me a rush!

I know that rush; I'm addicted to it, too. More importantly, you need
to continue to burn those calories in order to balance (or beat) your
caloric intake.

Again, all good advice by Joeu2004.

Let me add resting your legs, and body, for a few days can do wonders.
Often folks charge into a fitness program and expect instant results.
Give your body some occasional rest -- a couple days off now and then
-- (sometimes a little longing to get back to working out again can
really give you an energy boost) and your program some time to work.
And everyone's body, and body parts, are different -- some respond
quicker than others.

Lastly, try working in some squat or leg press type exercises. While
they won't thin your legs like distance running or biking they will
firm them up.

Yes - very much, thank you. I did lose 65 lbs about 5 years ago and I'm at
a comfortable 135lbs now (5'5"). I didn't lose it quickly, it took me about
10 months to do it. I don't think MUCH of my "flabbiness" is loose skin -
but there may be a little. It certainly isn't visible unless you start
pinching around. My guess is loose muscle. When I ride, it's almost always
in the higher gears so theres more resistance. The front of my legs are
fairly firm - it's just the inner and outter thighs that look terrible
(imo). I'm going to join a gym when my kids go back to school so I can work
with free weights and incorporate more weight training into my workout. Let
let the cardio fall by the way-side, though.... it kinda gives me a rush!

Take a look at this site www.e-gymonline.com. It has made a difference
to my phisique, toning muscle and strengthening. Though if you are
concerned about fat on your legs and other parts of your body then you
need to consider diet as well as exercise

As I said this web site has helped me so give it a try. There is a free
exercise class on the home page www.e-gymonline.com

My diet has taken a complete overhaul over the past 5 years. I lost 65lbs
and am very meticulous about what I eat now. Thanks for the website - I'll
check it out.
