Post subject: Introduction
Archived from groups: misc>fitness>weights (more info?)

First things first -- I read the FAQ.

I first lifted weights years ago when I was a competitive ice skater.
At first, it was just leg work, because in those days, no one thought
that upper body strength had anything to do with skating ability. Then
I had a partner who was into body building. After all, he had to pick
me up all day, while balancing on ice skates. Talk about functional
strength! I was a lot happier when I didn't get dropped on my face,
too. So he dragged me to the gym, too.

But then life moved on, and I did very, very little exercise for 10
years. I have ALWAYS done a minimal amount, at least some walking every
day. But it was pretty minimal. I was also smoking, drinking, and
eating way too much.

Then one day I was 35 and I read "Smart Women Stay Strong." It
convinced me that women really should lift weights. I also noticed at
that time that I was actually getting out of breath climbing two
flights of stairs. I used to run stairs, so that disturbed me. I
stopped using elevators for less than 5 story trips right then.

I was that last kid picked for teams, super weak. I've never really
shed my wimp image of myself, even when I was stopping everyone dead in
their tracks at the ice rink letting my partner throw me up into a
backflip and expect me to land. I did land, too, so I am probably not
the wimp I think of myself as.

But it has been six years now, and I only managed to do my first real
pushups in my life a couple of years ago. I didn't really make a
committment to exercise until about 3 years ago. A *lot* of terrible
things happened to me all at once, and I decided that being fat, drunk
and/or high, and unable to heave myself from the couch would NOT in any
way improve my life. I did hire a trainer, and I must have gotten one
of the good ones, because he taught me squats, deadlifts, and bench
presses (even though I couldn't bench a CAT, much less the bar).

But since I've been on my own, I have wandered back to the smith
machine and hack squats, and even leg presses on really lazy days. I
recently returned to those core lifts, and I was pleased to find that I
could do them with good form, if not a lot of weight.

I've been posting on various fitness boards here and there on the net
(how I have missed usenet!). I cannot stand responding to one more
woman say that she "doesn't want to get too big" or "is just looking to
tone." Just yesterday there was a discussion of lunges and the
consensus was that they make you bulky. I said, no, FAT makes you
bulky. But I can't take it anymore. So, hi everyone.

I'm thinking the FAQ might need an update. How often have we said that in

Welcome! But part of the indoctrination for newcomers is that you are
required to post naked JPGs. I'm sorry, it's not my rule...just one of
those mandatory MFW rules. Cohen is the guilty party for that one.

Feel free to email me a complete set.

Again, sorry for imposing the rule and all. But....rules are rules.

The book I was referring to was "Strong Women Stay Young. Obviously,
the crack hadn't quite worn off enough for me to bother proofreading.

Or was it "Strong Women Stay Smart"?

Aaaaaaaaaaaagggggggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhh!

I'd managed to forget about that particular author (Miriam E. Nelson).

I only read one of her books - she thought that 10 lb dumbbells (for things
like squats and lunges) was heavy. For everybody, including 20 - 49
year old males!

I think it was "Smart Women Know How To Quote Properly."

LOL, I am really batting zero on that one. First, I get the name of the
book *so completely wrong* and then I leave off the closing quote.

And English is my native language too.

OK, I'm batting less than zero. Sorry about that, I'm using the Google
interface. I figured out how to get it to quote. I wasn't aware that it
was not quoting. The mail interface quotes, but does not show you the
quotes, and I assumed that the usenet interface was doing the same.
Thank you for the heads-up.

OT: I was active on usenet beginning in 1991, but it became so spam
infested that I lost interest around 2000. I actually created a couple
of still-active groups. I miss the old usenet a lot. There are 12
billion message boards on the web now. I fought that tooth and nail
(I'm a longtime web developer) every step of the way. I always asked
"Why are we trying to replicate what already works? We don't need
message boards on web pages!" You used to be able to find the
advice/chat/tech support/whatever by searching usenet. Now you have to
find which of the 12 billion message boards might have what you are
looking for, and then search there.

Rant over. I will now properly quote my replies.

What I was referring to is the fact that you don't quote any of the post
you're replying to.

You should fix that.

Thank you for caring enough about it to take the time to learn how to do
it right.

I participate minimally in a handful of web-based BBS thingies, but I
don't like them nearly as much as I like usenet, and I don't like
usenet-today nearly as much as I liked usenet-when-I-found-it (in, I
think 1998).

Rants are good, and nothing is off topic - so do it up!

I hope all those stupid bitchy non-quoting dipshits who whine like
scolded three-year-olds whenever they're called on their unacceptable
posting habits are paying attention. HEY LOSERS! This is how you react
when someone tells you to quote properly! ARE YOU PAYING ATTENTION?

I thought you were.

I just got VERY frustrated some time ago because there was one lady who
kept holding Nelson's books up as good examples of how to exercise.
And I had to reply to either Lynne's post or yours. 50-50 chance.
