I read the entire thread and didn't see any pointers toward gastro.
Here's an unattributed quote from another newsgroup:
"count your blessings, [snip MFW patron's name]. gastric bypass (or
any other form of weight loss surgery) isn't for *most* people.
believe me, if i only needed to lose 50lbs, i'd not even be considering
weight loss surgery. most surgeons won't even consider talking to a
patient that needs to lose less than 100lbs, and that's only after
other attempts at weight loss have failed.
gastric surgery isn't for everyone, and for a long time, i didn't think
it was for me. after researching the hell out of it, and following
other people's stories and experiences, i decided that i was at a point
in my life where the risks of surgery are less than the risks of not
having surgery. some people are lucky and can lose weight on their
own. i've tried, multiple times, and i can't. it's not a matter of
will power, it's not a matter of exercising. contrary to popular
belief, i don't live with my head in the fridge. i need help getting
this weight off, and after research and reading, i found the best
possible help, for me."
/quote
J., I can offer you attribution via email, but can say here that I've
met this person and have seen them change dramatically as well as,
apparently, with no adverse effects.
I would suggest leaving Hamilton if there is such a shortage as you
describe elsewhere in this thread. You're having chest pains from
something as simple as typing and no doctor in Hamilton, Ontario will
see you? Outrageous. I suppose they'll see you if you're dead. "That's
nice. Thanks, doc."
Cardio? I wouldn't do anything until I get an actual doctor give you an
actual greenlight in addition to an actual effing plan to work.
Weights? Again, I'd wait on a doctor's okay.
Diet? You've been given a lot of info in this thread already. I'll add
water, water, water!

IIRC, recent studies have shown that women more often than not

I think you should find a doctor that will listen to you *now*.
That does not sound good to me. I would certainly think twice
about embarking on any exercise regimen until doing so.

It wasn't. The guy was a total jerk more concerned about his income

And you never will. I will *NOT* have that surgery. As far as I am
concerned it *is* mutilation of the body and you have to learn portion
control and do exercise anyway afterwards so I might as will do what
is necessary of me NOW then waiting to do it if I had the surgery.

I would *love* to leave Hamilton asap *but* my 14 year old son is in
an educational program here for kids with learning disabilitities that
*he* needs to be in and once he has completed it to the school's
satisfaction we are moving. It took 3 years of school meetings etc to

Yes I already do this and have been for some time. I do not use Fitday
but I use a notebook and pencil to write everything that goes into my
mouth down (even if it is just a teaspoonful) and keep watch on my
carbs and calories.

Hey, if you can do it manually, that works too. Just seems like a lot of
work to calculate calories and keep track of fat and protein intake
manually.

What suits you? Someone here mentioned Weight Watchers, and iirc, you
weren't too keen on that idea. That's fine, though it's helped a lot of
my friends. Just knowing that they were going to get weighed once a week
in front of people, and to have a group where they could discuss their
food issues was helpful.
But there's no reason you couldn't do the same thing with a friend, or a
group of friends. It could be a diet group or a church group. There are
also support groups online, but I would encourage some sort of face to
face accountability. People online only know what you tell them; it's
too easy to hide. People that see you and watch you get weighed can know
things, even if you don't tell them.
My bottom line here is to do what works for you. Some people can lose
weight without a lot of accountability. But to lose on the order of
magnitude that you're describing, it's going to be a long haul, and
having a supportive community - one that will encourage you when you're
feeling down and kick you in the butt when you need it - can be a big
helpl. >> Stay informed about: Help me lose the fat |

Glad you're going to take it on! Keep us updated on your progress. And,
post questions as they arise.
You've heard me mention Dally. Delenn is Dally. She would be a great asset
for you, and she has some impressive before and after photos. She knows her
stuff, so listen to her.
And you should take some before pictures as you start this venture. In a
few months, take some more and compare. When you see progress, you'll be
motivated to stay with it.

That's the same sort of "luck" you're going to use when you lose weight.
And people will come up to you in a few years and tell you exactly
that: "you're lucky that you can lose weight."
Uh, sure, "luck". Like all the effort at problem solving wasn't involved.
>> Basically, she needs to be willing to dedicate the next 3+ years

I'm thinking more like the rest of your life, but that's no big deal,
since it's going to get easier the more you work at it. It took me
about a full year of different seasons to really feel like I had the
lifestyle changes well underway. I set myself little microgoals. For
example, I wanted to get to a place where I didn't argue with myself
about exercise. It had to be like brushing my teeth: just something I
did because it needed doing, not something that was subject to debate
each day. That took maybe three months to happen.
I really recommend coming up with some distinct, measurable goals. Get
so you can get behind the wheel of the car without it being pushed all
the way back. Get so you can tuck in a shirt. Stuff like that. Not
weight related, but lifestyle related. (Pick something meaningful to
you.) Then celebrate those milestones as you reach them.

And of course, that is based on what the OP said.
It has been my experience that what most people say their doctor says, and
what was actually said, are worlds apart.
