Thanks to a response to one of my posts here and an article in Men's Health,
I've been doing goblet squats lately. I'm using pretty light weights right
now. Start with a 50-lb dumbell for 10 reps, then a 75 for 10, and down to a
50 or 60 for another 10; full range of motion for all sets.

What I like about them is they feel easier to do correctly form-wise, so I'm
less worried about injury, and they feel fairly intense, even at the low
weights I'm doing. After my second set my pulse has been hitting about
80-85% of my estimated MHR, which is higher than most other weight exercises
I do. (Now that I think about it, I can do correct 8-rep sets of leg presses
with 14 plates (45s) and my pulse rate is usually about 10-20 BPM lower than
when I do goblet squats. )

Anybody else doing goblets as their only squat exercise?

They are really just light front squats using a dumbbell. I normally do
barbell fronts squats however occasionally (when for whatever reason I don't
want to train heavy) I'll do them in this fashion. A couple of sets
supersetted with Hindu squats really blast the legs.

I've used them on and off for years but didn't know they were called "goblet
squats". Maybe that's just a new name for them.

Aren't you going to be restricted by how heavy of a dumbbell you can hold?
What problems did you have with traditional squats?

I don't think Steve can even jerk off without the use of a kettlebell! Smile

Yes, but that's not a problem because relatively low weights (eg, 75 lbs)
are challenging for the time being.

Having trouble with proper form and don't wanna further damage my botched L
knee.

Mmm. I quite like front squats - they're somehow more fun than normal
ones. Not that i've done either in quite a while now. Bad Tom.

Here is what a guy had to say about ways of holding the weight for front
squats:

http://www.straighttothebar.com/2006/10/holding_the_bar_in_the_front_s.html

The double kettlebell version is ... well, i think i'd find that
distracting if people did it in my gym.

He misses the way i hold the bar: kind of in the clean position, but with
hands pronated, on top of the bar. Like you'd just finished a curl. I find
it a lot easier to get into than the cossack or clean positions.
