My significant other is a 31 year old female who has been experiencing
horrible fatigue lately. Even when she gets a full 8 hours sleep, she feels
like hell. Her weightlifting and cardio has hit rock bottom. It is causing
her depression, and bad mood swings. There are a few factors such as working
a night shift, and trying to conduct daily business during the day. Her diet
is faltering, and as I said, her workouts are minimal now due to the
fatigue.
I am thinking it is something thyroid or endocrine induced. Granted, no one
here can do the work of a clinical physician who can do the correct
observations, but I am having a hard time convincing her to have these
things checked. Any suggestions? >> Stay informed about: Female chronic fatigue |

by night shift, i'm guessing you mean midnight to 8 a.m. or so.
well, then, you'll just have to accept it. it's a normal part
of working thru the night and trying tostay up all day also.
she's perenially jet-lagged. that's why 8 hours doesn't help.
it's not lack of sleep time. it's lack of structured sleep time.
i take it you've never had kids yet. this is how families (usually
just the woman, but sometimes the man) go thru the first
2 or 3 years of their children's life. no big deal. you get used
to it. just don't expect to much. take it easy. and stay
away from those fancy words..fatique, just say tired.
of course , it wouldn't hurt to get some blood tests done
and have a doctor's examination. i would.

Perhaps we need an expert on "female issues" from someone who has
experienced them firsthand? Lets consult the expert. Charles? What do
you think? >> Stay informed about: Female chronic fatigue |

Usual disclaimers etc.....check with doctor....and maybe....
Get her to stop working out and doing cardio for a month or two if the
doc finds nothing unusual?
There are only SO MANY hours in the day, and, with the best will in the
world, at times something's gotta give.
Just my totally non-medical opinion.

Could be 1000 things, ranging from hormonal issues to psychological
issue, etc. Have her see a decent doc. Medical advice on the net aint
gonna cure her.

Something is wrong. Chronic Fatigue means nothing. Just an excuse for
them not finding out what the real problem is. She needs a very
thorough physical. Hormone levels, allergies, etc. Test your house for
mold, etc. Keep looking. >> Stay informed about: Female chronic fatigue |

Are you sure 8 hours are a full night's sleep for her? Some people do
fine on less, but some need more, especially when they're very busy.
Is working the night shift new? Trying to sleep eight hours when it's
light out is very different from doing the same thing at night.
What about caffeine? Even if caffeine doesn't keep you awake, it can
still mess with your ability to sleep deeply. If her schedule has
changed, maybe she needs to look at when she's drinking caffeine, or
if she can cut it out entirely.
I guess it's possible there are physical reasons, but she just sounds
exhausted to me. When I'm unable to get restful sleep for a while, I
also experience mood swings.

Why would you think that? It sounds like it's been "induced" by a
change of schedule and attempting to live more life than she has time
for. The first thing I'd advise is to cut out everything that's not
strictly necessary for a few days - no exercise at all. Start with that
and gradually add things in slowly from there, and keep exercise and
diet on a maintenance schedule only (e.g., fewer workouts per week,
shorter workouts) until life calms down.

A full 8 hours of sleep after a week or more of sleep deprivation
will not "make up" for the lost sleep.

Sounds to me like simple exhaustion. Caveat: I Am Not A Doctor.

No surprise there.

I am thinking the schedule change (not to mention trying to live
out-of-sync with her normal wake/sleep rhythms) and trying to cram
too much into too few hours is more likely the problem. Stress
may be a factor.

Working night shift and trying to do business during the day makes
8 hrs of consecutive sleep seem unlikely. 8 hrs sleep from multiple naps
is not the same as 8 hrs of solid sleep. Try to fix sleep and diet issues.
If there's no improvement see a good doctor. >> Stay informed about: Female chronic fatigue |
