Hello,
When I was a kid, I did NOT like exercise or PE class. Now that I'm an
adult, I spoke to a trainer, asking for advice on exercise. He
recommended some exercises that were surely good, but it was all too
much for me. I need to start simply: let's climb the hill by the park,
before we climb Mount Everest. Hey, let's climb the *speed bump*
before that!
I'm age 48 and definitely out of shape. So, what would you recommend
for someone like me?
Also, I would like for my kids to have a chance at better fitness than
I've got. They are, presently, ages 11-16, and some of them dislike
exercise as much as I did. What kinds of start-at-the-beginning
exercises would you recommend for them?
In particular, let's NOT do the exercises that would help them lose
weight. They don't need that.
Thank you very much!

Walk. Start by doing simple things like parking at the far end of the
parking lot, increase gradually. Find a pleasureable destination if you
can.

Walking is fine for kids, too.
Find what they like or if they have friends that play a sport they might
like.

Especially if you are walking to, or at, an interesting place that they
enjoy. Go to a zoo and walk. Take a hike over an interesting trail. Take
a walking tour that involves sites that your kids might like. If your
oldest child is thinking about colleges--visit college campuses and take
a walking tour.

Plus, there are activities, like dancing, that aren't sports but offer
exercise. You might try the video game "Dance Dance Revolution." Kids
can burn a lot of calories playing that, and, while it's a video game,
kinds can exercise more than their thumbs playing.
Some activities, while they might be considered sports, can also just be
recreational, non-competitive, and fun. Some that come to mind are
biking, skateboarding, in-line or ice skating, bowling, table tennis
(AKA ping pong), wall climbing, playing paintball (supervised, of
course,) or lazer tag. Or, if water activities might appeal to you or
your kids, try swimming, surfing, boogie boarding, snorkling, or scuba
diving.

Getting a routine route to walk every day is a good start. It's
exercise. You will increase your abilities. You will discover that it
works for you, just like it works for everyone else. You will discover
that the goons you met in high school PT are no longer part of your life.
You will eventually enjoy it. From there to the 500lb deadlift is just a
matter of time and persistence.

walk or ride a bike. If you don't enjoy it, do it anyway. We all do
things we don't enjoy. Get a MP3 player and listen to music or books on
tape or podcasts. Suck it up for 30 minutes a day.

Have a mandatory "outdoor hour" every day to avoid
the distraction of indoor passive electronic entertainments.
You'll probably start filling it with some sort of activity
out of boredom. Doesn't have to be some rigorous
exercise- just get moving. Enforce the same
outdoor electronic curfew on the kids for an hour each day too. >> Stay informed about: Exercise? But I hate exercise! |

You may find taking out a short-term membership in a commercial gym will
give you some ideas/learning experience.
Not saying the people there are sages/gurus, but
watching/learning/experimenting, in a well-equipped place, can be well worth
the cost. Plus, the free weight room is where you might find the more
relevant, albeit at times extreme, advice.
Walking, biking, etc. is all good, but lacks the concentrated "oomph" I
believe we need.
Also, not being "sure" about the true efficacy of a program can sap one's
will power/discipline.
Vs. *knowing* that what you are doing is effective, which can be it's own
powerful motivation.
For example, there is a school of thought that says if you were to do *one*
exercise, and one exercise only, for the rest of your life, the clean and
jerk should be it. Not saying this etched in stone, but a lot of
knowledgeable people voice this opinion.
I have found that for myself, a modified clean & jerk is *very* challenging
in a fun way (as fun as exercise can get), and addresses so many muscles
that you don't have to do a whole lot else, for general fitness.
Plus, it is very versatile, incl. body flexibility, and can be done w/ light
weights as well, for what appears like a quasi-cardio workout.
Not as versatile as my HoloBarre, but then, sed HB ain't ready.....
Well, jmw's HB is ready, but I suspect he'll be using the long smooth
polished bar for sumpn else....
Anyway, a commercial gym will expose you to a lot of interesting stuff, some
more useful than others, some right and some wrong, so you have to wend your
way somewhat judiciously.
And always be willing to experiment.
There's a lot of theory/science/technical stuff underlying fitness/health,
which itself can be useful to your kids, if you use exercise etc as a
"vehicle" for academic knowledge.
Someone mentioned video games--I think these have the kids dance, or move
around or sumpn.
That's OK, except that I believe videos intrinsically dumb our kids down,
and I believe there are much better ways to address the issue--by making
fitness/ex academically interesting.
You could get proly several hundred PhDs in perhaps a cupla dozen different
disciplines by just studying one weight lifting move and/or running.
imo, it is a tremendous failing in our school system, that things like PE,
shop, auto repair, are not *intimately* linked to academics, and instead are
dumbed down, or cast perjoratively into the "vocational".
Sheeit, Toyata factory mechanics are pullin down $90 K--and that's not
including sidework in their own home garage.... boy, what a mistake *I*
made....

The gym is a good idea, you should try it out, there are so many choices.. I'm sure you'll find something that you like.. your children also will like doing exercises when they'll know they will be healthier... I did so little exercises in my youth that now I am suffering from cholesterol.. Doing exercises is not enough for me and i have to buy lipitor everytime... Well, I'm lucky to get it cheaper at a http://www.drugdelivery.ca (canadian pharmacy), medicine is so expensive nowadays... The gym fee and the lipitor cost so much that I regret not having done more exercises when i was younger. >> Stay informed about: Exercise? But I hate exercise! |

There's really no other way around to getting fit but doing exercises and eat good nutritious food. I know doing exercises is not for everyone and fortunately I love exercises since my childhood and I'm feeling good at my age. I'm so glad about it. But let's just think that our health is our next priority next to family:) >> Stay informed about: Exercise? But I hate exercise! |
