Do you have any preferences for a type of machine or piece of equipment
that would be an alternative to running?

Now that I am 48, I find that I am getting injuries to me feet and
ankles too frequently to continue relatively light running. I have been
running three miles three times a week. I am typing this while recovering
from a shin splint, the first one I've ever had. It is healing but slowly.
I use orthtics in my shoes, stretch, and warm up regularly. Given the other
injuries I've had recently, I think I need to find an alternative to
running, preferably one that I can do in my house. I am not fond of
swimming and bicycling is not something I am interested in.

There are many different pieces of machinery out there - ellipticals,
"NordiTracks, etc. I would have considered a treadmill but I am concerned
that I will simply reinjure myself.

Thanks in Advance.

a rowing machine gives a god cardio workout, kayaking is good for outdoor
activity.

If you get a decent treadmill, they have good floating floors. It
basically cushions the blow of your weight when running. If you
really cant take it anymore, the elliptical will do it for you. Its
lower impact to the body and gets your arms in the game too. You can
get just as good as a workout with ellipicals as you can with running.
Stay away from stairmasters if you already have problems. Nothing
like doing some damage to those already worn knees.

Get a good unit if you want something that will last you for awhile.
(depending on your desired routing)
