I'm looking into getting my own elliptical machine to use as part of my
weight loss plan.

I'm interested in the Horizon EX55 which has a weight limit of 250. I
currently weigh just under 290 but that willl come off fairly quickly with
exercise. Would it be okay to get this machine considering I'm slightly over
the weight limit or should I get a bigger machine that holds more? My other
choice is a larger Horizon or the Universal U420. TIA

Not to be overly harsh but the weight will not necessarily come off,
fairly quickly or otherwise, with exercise. Diet is 90% of the battle
for most people, not exercise.

Your extra weight will void your warranty. 40 lbs. over isn't slightly,
it's about 15% over. 5 lbs. over is slightly.

If you haven't used trainers like these before, I recommend you join a
gym for a few months and try them out before you buy one.

Best of luck to you.
