Archived from groups: misc>fitness>weights (more info?)

I've had a pain in my elbow now for a few months right where my funny
bone is. I went to the doc yesterday and he said that my ulnar nerve may
be compressed and that it could be caused by my weight lifting. He
suggested that I either back off the weights for a while or do different
weights that don't require a lot of grip or bending of the elbow. I've
already taken a week off training prior to seeing the doctor to see if
resting it helped but it's still painful. It doesn't always hurt though.

I looked this up on about.com and they call it Cubital Tunnel Syndrome
(http://orthopedics.about.com/cs/elbow/a/cubitaltunnel.htm). It suggests
splinting the elbow and taking anti-inflammatory medication (doctor
didn't mention this, only backing off weights or surgery).

Has anyone ever experienced this? If so, what did you do to take care of
it? I asked the doc what I can do as alternative exercises and all he
said were machine flies. Do you have any suggestions for the rest of my
exercises? I can do squats and I can probably purchase some of those
wrist straps for DLing but the rest I'm not sure of.

I currently do the following full body routine 2-3 times per week on
free weights in my basement (I can use a gym if I need to resort to
machines):

Squat / DL (alternating days)
Incline BP
Shoulder Press
DB Row
Lat Pulldown or pull ups

I've been lifting high weights / low reps for strength.

Thanks!

Squats are probably the cause. Sounds weird, but it is very common to
have elbow tendon problems when squatting heavy. It you have access to a
safety squat bar or a longer buffalo bar use that for a while. If not
try squatting while grabbing the first the plate at the top (use a 25 or
35 for the second plate).

Sounds very weird. When squatting I do grip the bar tight (a reaction to
lifting heavy I suppose). I'll try this out for squatting and see how I do.

Thanks Keith!

Remember to give it enough time to have an effect: what takes time to
bring on will take time to wear off.

I'm going to die rather sooner than I'd like. I tried to protect my
neighbours from crime, and became the victim of it. Complications in
hospital following this resulted in a serious illness. I now need a bone
marrow transplant. Many people around the world are waiting for a marrow
transplant, too. Please volunteer to be a marrow donor:

I'll probably find some alternative exercises for the ones that I can't
modify and do them for a month or so to see how things are going. I
could probably use a change anyway Smile

I do wonder if this injury is bound to happen again in the future.
