What kind of # in calories (at least according to readouts) do those of you
who are sucessful with cardio for fat loss go for? Myself I try to burn
400 - 500 cals on the treadmill 4 X a week and it seems to do nicely. Thanks

OMFG I am not a troll WTF! This is a genuine question. I know that machine
calorie readouts aren't necessarily very accurate but still.... actually I
am arguing with a friend. I am fairly happy with my results but he insists
that I am not doing nearly enough. On the other hand I feel that I am
pushing myself to about 80% of collapsing and that this is pretty damn good.
I am 222lbs and I treadmill currently for 20 - 30 mins on incline 2 speed
5.8 - 6.2. Sometimes I go up to 7 hold as long as I can and then have to
rest a bit... my version of HIIT. I think I'm doing pretty damn well but
kind of want to see what others do.

Personally for me what I have found to be successful for myself and
clients is the use of interval training. So while they may burn about
200-300 calories by the end of the day due to the increase in exercise
post oxidative consumption they are able to burn about 400-600 calories
total for the day, this does not include the circuit training using the
large muscle groups thats involved as well. I'm glad that what you
doing is working for you. Perhaps you can change it around when you
plateau but if it's not broken don't fix it.

Do an hour per day, and you'll burn more cals sleeping, than a
sedentary person.

How long does it take you to burn 400- 500 calories?

Typically, based on a heart rate target of 80% (very rough) max and
studies showing that running at that level of O2 consumption is in the
neighborhood of 11-14 cal/min my perceived level of exertion on a
treadmill is typically 30 minutes to burn 400- 500 calories. But I
prefer the oldstyle Stairmaster with the treadmill stairs,

But he said he wants to lose fat.

His second post (top-posted, of course) said he is doing some version of
HIIT. I certainly think that helped my metabolism when I was
pre-diabetic. But it's hard to tell because I started lifting heavy at
the same time as I started HIIT.

Dude, if you're trying to lose fat then you need to lift weights. If
you're trying to do the basic maintenance required by owners of human
bodies then you need to do cardio for half an hour most days of the
week, and lift weights a couple of times a week, too.

The problem with treadmills is that it's punishing. A much better idea
for cardio is ANYTHING you enjoy. Rollerblading with your kids.
Playing badminton with your friends. Swimming. Cycling. Getting on a
volleyball team. Something that is fun, as opposed to just serving your
time.

But the main problem I've got with your calories-out method of treadmill
weight loss is that you can undo it IMMEDIATELY by eating too much.
Half an hour on the treadmill is wiped out in one bagel.

So, what's your diet look like? And why aren't you lifting weights?
And why is a treadmill the only cardio you can think of?

I do weights 2 X week front/back split. I don't do a leg day because I don't
want any more mass on my legs, they are already fukin beautiful from incline
treadmill (I was doing random up to 5 now I just stay at 2.) I know that I
am missing the great cal burn from squats but that's OK.

I also am starting to do some swimming and I also do stationary biking
especially for 10 mins after I feel like I can't run anymore.

I eat as near a perfect diet as I can and from clean food. I set my target
at 2600 cals/day. Try to get at least 160g protein daily if not more. The
rest I split between carbs (as much possible from complex carbs, non
processed/enriched etc.) and "good" fats.

I am currently 222lbs @ 23% BF having dropped 3% BF in the last 6 weeks.
I've dropped my resting heart rate from 76 to 57 BPM. It's still very
challenging because I am still a fat bastard but it takes time and
persistance.

I think I am doing very well. I have a tiny (5'9 @ 155lbs @ 10%) but ripped
friend however that keeps grinding me. Tries to tell me that I have too much
muscle already, to not even bother with weights or because don't burn enough
calories doing them, and to go even harder on cardio. The only thing I am
trying to confirm here is my belief that 400-500 cals burnt in 20 - 30 mins
at the gym 4-5 times a week is pretty much perfect for fat loss and is a
good accomplishment. Sure there are people (marathon training etc.) that
will burn like 1000 + cals each time.

I find it odd that no training program etc. talks about a calorie burn
target. They say min 20 mins at around 80% max heart rate. They don't
consider the persons weight or their capacity and that's what I'd like to
see.... somehting that says "try to burn x calories x times a week...."

Yup 20 - 30 mins. The reason I do this is because I hate spending time on
the treadmill... bores the hell out of me... prefer to put in more
concentrated effort and stop sooner.
