I am trying to buy some dumbells, free weights and a mat (where I can
drop weights and my house floor will not be damaged). Can anyone tell
me where I can find this type of stuff in Dallas, preferably used?
Also, any suggestions on how I can do lower body exercises at home
without buying expensive equipment would be appreciated. I don't want
to do squats with the dumbells. I read about a belt where you can
attach weights. I am looking to do basic bodybuilding execises at home.
Also, any suggestions on how I can do bench presses (or what I need to
buy) without putting the dumbells on my thigh and quickly lying
backwards would be appreciated.
Thanks to anyone who responds. >> Stay informed about: Buying home bodybuilding equipment at home |

4' x 8' x 3/4" rubber mats will protect your floor from just about
anything - I've dropped 350 lb. deadlifts on them, with handmade tile
laid over concrete beneath, and none of the tiles have ever gotten even
a scratch. You can buy these mats from a farm store - just ask for
stall mats, as in horse stall mats. Around here they cost about $40
apiece. The same thing goes for about twice that at a fitness store. I
have both kinds here and I can't tell the difference.

Buy a 300 lb. Olympic weight set for $150 and deadlift - you get a 45
lb. bar and 255 lbs. of weight in the basic set. If you want to squat,
spend $300 on a power rack in addition. If you want to bench, buy a
bench.

Have tried Craigslist? I have been checking them out here in the SF area,
and there seems to be no end to the home gyms gathering dust in garages.
How about the yellow pages? Here in the Bay area we have a store called
Play It Again Sports that sells used sports equipment including, in
particular, weights. I think I have heard of them in other cities too.

Who the heck has DBs in the 100-200 lb range?

Is that the only acceptable weight range for squatting for everyone ever
all the time? >> Stay informed about: Buying home bodybuilding equipment at home |

No, but do you see much squat work done with less that 200 or more than 400
pounds?

Try doing ball squats with dumbbells. No need for a cage, and you
won't be able to use nearly as much weight. >> Stay informed about: Buying home bodybuilding equipment at home |

Yes. I have never squatted 200 pounds. I probably could eek out a max
rep in that range in the power cage, but I'm more likely to do sets in
the 8 to 12 range (or maybe a pyramid going down to 6). For me it's
about getting in some time sweating, not pushing the max possible weight.
I can really isolate the quads and work the glutes with ass to grass
dumbbell squats against a swiss ball. Body weight isn't bad, but it's
better to use as heavy of dumbbell as I can grasp. Mine go into the 40
pound range. I also find this range useful for deadlifting.
See this demo of what I'm talking about:
http://sparkpeople.com/myspark/ex/exercises.asp?ID=189
You don't always have to duplicate powerlifting apparatus in a home gym.
Change it so you're doing higher reps. Slow it down and really
concentrate on form. Increase the range of motion. (I keep seeing guys
doing tiny little curtsies and calling them squats. Sure, they can HOLD
the weight on their backs, but they can't get ass to grass with it...
and then stand up again.)
