I've read recommendations to buy new walking shoes every 4 months, but this
seems excessive (AND hard on the budget!)

I've had my shoes around 8 months or so. They still seem *like new* although
I walk anywhere from 2 to 5 miles a day.

Suggestions?

According to this site, around 300-500 miles. They also give some other
tips on determining when to change shoes.

Cat:

Here's what I do: I have 4 pairs
of Ecco shoes that I rotate daily.
This strategy gives my shoes time to
dry out after use. Shoes tend to
last longer this way also.

Some people can destroy a pair of
shoes in 2 months, while others walk
so well that shoes seem to last
forever...your mileage may differ.

In addition, I wear Thorlo socks. I
own 20 pairs so they tend to really last
b/c I follow Thorlo's washing instructions
that increases durability and comfort.

I'll second the recommendation on the Thorlo socks. I've worn them for
quite a few years and they do make a big difference.

Hi,

I'm still using the pair of cheap Chinese shoes that my father got
through the mail (Haband I think) a couple of years ago. I must have a
couple thousand miles on them by now, mostly on pavement, at 4 mph.
I've added new urethane to the heels several times since they wear on
the outer edge. But they work: my feet never get sore, so what the
heck? I'm not trying to impress anyone else.

Cheers, Alan

Just like tires on a car, the more miles you put on them the more often you
should replace them. When you see a favorite pair of sneakers on sale, buy
them. Then you can alternat between two pairs of shoes so you aren't
putting as much miles on one pair. Also, use the shoes only for your
walking workouts. Each step goes towards putting more miles on them. I
run on the treadmill at the gym. After the run, I take my running shoes
off and put on slides to wear home in case I have to make some stops on the
way.

I rotate several pairs of Eccos and New Balance .. never wearing the same
pair 2 days in a row.. walk in the Texas hill country 2 or 3 miles every
day. Hills are good! Bought a Sissel ball to give it a try for a bit
more exercise.

Starting to become addicted!

I bought a pair of Thorlos. They were about US$12. I got the kind touted
as 'for hiking.' Maybe it was just very warm, but I thought they made my
feet uncomfortably hot. I put them away to try again when it gets colder.
I live in New Jersey.
