The last year has been a setback for me, for multiple reasons
including health, work and injuries. I'm now back to about 180 @ 20%
bodyfat, down from 210 @ 10% bodyfat a couple years ago.

I've had the most success in this situation with simple formulas -
quit fast food, stop using fatty condiments and sauces, increase the
protein a ton. I'm starting this up again, but wonder if any of you
might have other simple formulae that a dilletante like me (or newbies
to the group) could take advantage of.

The powerlifter answer to my subject might be "Eat Everything You
See", but I'm looking for aesthetics right now, not raw strength.

Thanks for any ideas. Even humorous snark.

Dense carbs? Quality? How about, "Protein and lots of it"?

My apologies to Shute for my terse post above. Here it is again for you my
little pooper:

What are dense carbs? How do you define "quality" when it relates to dense
carbs?

On a further note, how will fibre help in a bulking diet?

Just a few examples ..foods CAN have a higher caloric value and be
considered high fiber at the same time ..
keeping in mind one cup isnt much, and recommended fiber intake per day
is 25-30 grams:

1 cup sweet potatoes = 180 calories/4 grams protein/41 grams carbs
(7grams fiber)
1 cup yams = 158 calories /2 grams protein/38 grams carbs (5.3 grams
fiber)
1 cup lima beans = 216 calories/15 grams protein/40 grams carbs (13
grams fiber)
1 cup lentils = 230 calories/18 grams protein/40 grams carbs (16 grams
fiber)
2 cups raison bran = 342 calories/9 grams protein/83 grams carbs (10
grams fiber)
1 serving (2oz) Wild Oats whole wheat pasta = 213 calories/7 grams
protein/44 grams carbs (6 grams fiber)

So say breakfast for someone who wanted to gain weight:
1 cup oatmeal = 147 calories/6 grams protein/25 grams carbs (4grams
fiber)
2 pieces of whole wheat toast (Trader Joes/5 wheat grain) 220
calories/8 grams protein/46 grams carbs (6 grams fiber)
1 cup egg beaters or similar = 211 calories/30 grams protien/3.2 grams
carbs (0 fiber)
One navel orange = 75 calories/1.4 grams protein/19 grams carbs (3.4
grams fiber)
Total breakfast intake = 653 calories/45 grams protein/93 grams carbs
(13 grams fiber)

And btw 'dense' carbs are carbs that do not break down into blood
sugars very fast .. you know like eating oatmeal compared to candy
floss .. and 'quality' carbs are what we know we should be eating but
dont Wink like vegetables, fruits and whole grains over cakes, donuts,
candies, and icecream. If you cant understand the difference then you
should take Nutrition 101.

Your own summary is more than five words:
> quit fast food, stop using fatty condiments and sauces, increase the
> protein a ton.
but it sounds good to me. Or how about:

"Eat more good food."

That's four words. I could make it five words by adding "Lift." But that
would be about something more than diet, I guess. And I guess you could
probably drop the "good" adjective from the "food" if you "lift" enough.
But what do I know?

Dense and high fiber are contradictive. Its either high fiber or calric
dense. Never both.

Even i know that, and i dont know anything about nutrition.

Aside from the fact that fast food gives best results when its consumede
fast.

And thats a FACT!

I usually recommend a similair increase in carbs and protein when it comes
to gaing weight. Most people allready consume enough fats anyway.

And again, i actually shouldnt make nutritional reccomendations.
So i wont.

I take 3 MetaMucil each day. Dissolved in water.

I guess thats true.

But i still wouldnt advice to eat foods high in fiber to increase weight.

Assuming that person allready consumes enough fiber and/or doesnt have
digestive problems.

Eskimos never eat fiber, do they? There is NO fiber around there ;-O

It seems we are the only species on the planet that eat both meat, from
different animal sources, and fish. And diary products. And eggs. And
potatoes. And rice. And pasta. And fruits. Different kinds. And vegetables.
Different kinds.

You know... that NEVER made any sense to me.

Why would i eat ANYTHING that doesnt grow, or live here ?!?!?!

Ever thought about that? Its not logical.

Seafood is healthy, but the majority of people doesnt live near the shores.
My girlfriend eats weird tropical fish, imported from South America. Do you
know the amount of EFA they contain? Almost zero. It seems the colder the
water/seas, the more omega-3 and 6 there is present.

(FWIW, i eat 3 haring "herring" sandwiches RAW a few hours ago. Delicious!)

A lot of African people never eat fish from the sea, and they cant handle
milk. But they dont seem to have much health issues. Not counting the ones
who or starving to death ;-(

Most animals go their entire LIFE on a diet that only have a few different
kinda nutrients, over and over and over again. Yet they are in pretty good
health, pretty good shape and DAMN strong!

Food for thought. I think...

Wrong. Domesticated pigs will eat all that if it's given to them.
