There is a fairly comprehensive sports/fitness library about 35 feet
down the hall from my office. What should I read?

All of it Smile

It depends on what your interests are as well as your personal goals.
The two are not necessarily limited to each other.

What and who you read also depends on how much information you desire
(i.e. the breadth of background you wish to acquire).

If you work in a dept related to sports (exercise phys/kinesiology?),
then I'm sure one of the faculty can more appropriately answer your
question (they are familiar with the contents of the library, etc).

I *would* be training for ice dancing if I lived anywhere near a sheet
of ice. Alas, I do not.

My goals are are: not be a wimp. I can't do a pull-up. I am *going* to
get strong enough to do them. My dips are *slightly* closer than my
pull-ups. But I still can't do one. I want to be strong. I am the
proverbial last one picked for teams, super-weak girl.

I was an ice skater, and fairly high level. But that was over 15 years
ago. And even then, I had *no* upper body strength.

I intend to just keep increasing the weight that I can lift until one
of the following happens: 1) I decide that it's enough (unlikely) or 2)
old age actually prevents me from making improvements. I am 41 now, so
I have many years of improvement ahead of me.

The aesthetics follow, IMO. Looking great is nice, but legs that work
for as long as possible are better.

Ahem. Yeah, sure they are. It actually is a *school* related to sports,
but, um... no comment.

Well, I have no idea what you are implying there, so I can't comment
any further.

I have to be very careful what I say here. Basically, the faculty are
overweight, out of shape, or of the opinion that women will bulk up if
they lift "too much."

Oh for Pete's sake. What 'school' is this??
Are they living in the '50's? or just ignorant?

It wouldn't be a wise career move for me to name the school. Then
again, I tell people all the time that showing up for work here every
day isn't a wise career move...

Ignorant has a nice ring to it.

What are your goals? Are you training for a sport, aesthetics?

As Elzinator joked, read everything. Most books offer atleast
something of value. Keep an open mind and mix approaches - don't buy
into anyone who tells you that there is one way to train. That being
said, some are better than others, so my recommendations are below:

I've got a library of Stuart McRobert books that I love. He's
published a number of books:
- Brawn
- Further Brawn
- Beyond Brawn
- The Insider's Tell-All Handbook on Weight Training Technique

To learn how to complete key compound movements with good form -
definately look for 'The Insiders's Tell-All...'

For all around athleticism I recently picked up a book called
'Training for Speed, Agility and Quickness' (Lee E.Brown et al.).
While I hesitate to recommend it because of the weak illustrations, it
is bursting with great exercises and I have benefited greatly from
this book. While it doesn't focus on strength, it does wonders for
speed, agility and quickness which certainly gives you more
power/balance in whatever sport/activity you pursue.

Magazines! Most men's magazines are full of supplement junk and the
articles are rarely more than lame advertisements, so stick with
Women's magazines, they tend to have some really good articles.

>The aesthetics follow, IMO. Looking great is nice, but legs that work
>for as long as possible are better.

Mix in some Yoga and Pilates too. Great for stabilizing muscles and
all around mind/body health.

ewwwwhhhhh....

Those types.

Anyhow, in terms of texts my favorite is Zatsiorsky's "Science and
Practise of Strength Training". But I tend to be the egghead type.
