I was wondering about the general differential in body fat
measurement between a scale and callipers. I understand callipers are
much more accurate. If anyone has used both to measure body fat, can
you tell me what is the margin of error of the scale as compared to the
calliper? Your responses will be appreciated. Thanks!

I had the "water dunk" bodyfat test at a local university hospital in 2003.
(incidentally it was only $40) On the same day I had them do the caliper
test for comparison. They were within 1%.

On the other hand, I have a Tanita. If you are not very very consistant
about the conditions you are weighing under (hydration, empty stomach,
recent exercise, time of day) the results vary wildly. A month ago I had
the 7 site caliper test done and it put me around 30-31% and I could get the
same reading with the Tanita, as long as I was consistant. I weigh in the
evening, no previous exercise for at least a few hours, well hydrated. It
is very consistant.

The thing that I am looking for personally is a way to track a downward
trend, not absolutes. I'll use my Tanita to make sure I'm going in the
right direction, and after a couple months go by, if I've seen a significant
change on my Tanita, I'll go back in for another caliper test.

For me, I get my highest reading in the morning. My manual says you are not
supposed to do it in the morning, because you are dehydrated. What does it
tell you in the evening?

I recently bought the Omron HBF-306 handheld analyzer:

http://www.pricegrabber.com/p__Omron_Omron_HBF_306_Body_Fat_Analyzer,_...54301/s

I am very happy with it. It is within 2% of what my 7 point skin fold test
gives me. And it only varies < 2% throughout the day, morning to evening.
I would highly recommend it. Steve likes his as well. I've used the the
Tanita scales before and they are a joke compared to this. This thing
actually works like it claims. I paid $40 including shipping.

What do you suppose the difference is in technology between the Omron and
Tanita? I've heard the Omron was better, but couldn't imagine why. I
thought it was the same method...

Could it be a difference in how they are used? (A little hint for
you.)

mmmmmmm. why thank you. Why would holding it in my hand be more accurate
than standing on it?

Might it depend on the area of your body where your fat is most
prominent?

Ok. So if your biggest fat deposit is sitting squarely on your belly, but
the rest of you is fairly lean, which one is going to be most accurate?
Hand-held, or scale?

Hmm. So distal regions means lower body? Thank you so much, John. I
don't mean to speak for the great unwashed, but I really appreciate you
simplifying all that. Whew!

Say, while you're at it, mister explain-it-in-simple-terms, just what
in hell does /this/ mean?

Specifically, "very will the triceps skinfold". Wtf? Did you mean,
"unit correlated very wEll WITH the triceps skinfold"? Maybe you could
use a skinfold measurement on that overtaxed gray matter.

Well, the scales have been notoriously inaccurate. However, in a
poster presentation that was published in the proceedings of the
recent ISSN conference in which Will participated, an Omron hand-held
bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) unit correlated very will the
triceps skinfold, strongly but somewhat less with the suprailiac and
adbominal skinfold. It was implied that there was a "trend toward
weaker relationships between upper body BIA and skinfolds from more
distal regions." That means lower body measurements.

My guess is the hand-held. It correlated pretty well with the
suprailiac and abdominal skinfold.
