I think you're confusing two demonstrations; powder explosion (where you
suspend a flammable powder in air and ignite it) and explosive mixture
(where you put methane in a tin with a pinhole at the top and bottom and
then light the methane coming out of the top. Eventually you end up with
an explosive mixture in the tin and the lid is blown off)

Fine aluminium oxide powder is commonly used as a polish. It won't burn,
though, since it's effectively already been burnt.

Well, I've done the one with powder and a tin. Candle inside (small
holes in the bottom and top to allow enough air in to keep it alight.
Pile of flour. Puff pipe leading through another hole. Blow down pipe,
flour goes bang, off comes lid.

What ever happened to the good old days where you would secure with a tight
cable tie a johnnie filled with talc over the exhaust pipe? Surprised))))
