Hi all,
I think my training could do with some adjustment, I workout at home
three times a week, have been training for two years, but I think my
chest and front delts are more trained than my back muscles, so would
like to shift the emphasis to more back workouts to equalize the
strength. My current routine below:-
Mainly strength training(my workouts are based on achieving 4 sets of 8
reps(32) successfully before moving up on weight.
Tuesday
5 Sets of Flat benching(1 Warmup on 60Kg 4 on 85KG to Failier)
4 Sets of incline benching(65Kg)
Thursday
4 Sets of Deadlifts(1 80 Kg warmup and 3 120KG at the mo)
3 Sets Upright Rows(35kg)
3 Sets of bent over rows (60KG)
Saturday
3 Sets of French press 42.5KG
3 Sets of Closed grip Benching (70kg)
3 Sets of Twisted Bicep Curls(15kg each arm)
3 Sets of Straight Arm Bicep curls(25KG)
Equipment wise I have and Olympic Bench, Olympic Bar, Two Dumbells, An
Ez Bar. And 200KG of olympic plates.
I feel my back could be stronger, therefore could you recommend a
change of routine?
Cheers

27 sets of upper body.
4 sets for legs and posterior chain.
Nice. Almost a 7:1 relation.
I'd drop inclines (redundant), french presses (sissy isolation),
upright rows (presses are superior, IMO), close grip bench presses
(your triceps will be hit nicely with regular and overhead presses) and
the freakin' curls.
Substitute with squats, standing military presses and chins.
And google for "madcow 5x5". >> Stay informed about: Balancing Front and Back Muscles |

Add some HEAVY dumbbell rows. Also, you say you close grip press 70kg but
only bench 85kg; there's something very wrong there.
What exercises for delts?
I've got another big worry for you; how do you balance your legs with your
upper body!?!

A simple change to try - move the rows to bench day, and add
pullups/chinups to deadlift day. Bench and row makes a nice
combination, and deadlift and pullups do, too.
As to 4 sets of 8, you'll do much better if you add some variety in this
regard. Perhaps a month of 4 sets of 8, then a month of 6 sets of 6,
then a month of 8 sets of 4, all of which would see you using heavier
and heavier weights just by virtue of the set/rep structure.
Just a few thoughts for you.

I rotate squats with Deadlifts (4 Sets at 120Kg).
With closed grip benching, surely it would naturally be less weight
than normal Benchpress and the narrow grip uses mostly arms and hardly
any chest?

Why do you say that, Bullster? My CG bench max isn't far off my flat
bench either.

I disagree. My close grip bench, at least for 5 reps, is the same for
me as my regular bench and my close grips have my index fingers inside
the knurling. But, I compete using a bench shirt so my triceps need
to be exceptionally strong.
Just another example, I bench about 275 raw. I can triple 295 off of
a one board, triple 315 off a two board and 335 off a 3 board.
Benching in a shirt is all about the triceps. >> Stay informed about: Balancing Front and Back Muscles |

You're benching up round the 300 lb mark now, aren't you, mate? 75% of
that would be....<...counts on fingers...> 225 lb. I'm only benching
about 210 for a couple, but I think I could close-grip 200 for a couple
too.
Depends on how close-grip you close-grip, though. How far apart are
your hands? Mine are about 12 - 15". We don't have any of that fancy
"knurling" the good Mr Hanson refers to so I can't say where my
hands are in relation to that.
