Anyone have any suggestions how I can prevent sore shoulders from setting in
after about 5 miles. I'm 45 and enjoy walking, but after 5 miles my
shoulders begin to ache, thus making me head home.. I feel better when my
elbows are at 90 degrees, but soon the back aches again.. Maybe it will get
better as I have only been walking for 2 months now.. doing 4 miles
generally with 2x a week 8 mile walks

Have you tried walking with your hands inside your pockets
for part of the distance?

Yes, last night I did an 8 mile walk at around 10pm and it was pretty cold
out so I did have my hands in my pockets at times and yes, it did alleviate
the symptoms for a little bit.. I think I might look for a back support to
walk in.. I'm 6/5" and I tend to walk a little slumped over I have told when
I get going.. I tend to walk at almost 4mph

Are you hunching up or something?
Are your shoulders tense, with the effort to hold your arms just-so?

Relax your shoulders so those muscles aren't the ones holding your arms in
position.
Also change your arm position from time to time -- swing around a bit, wave
back & forth, windmill, wiggle your shoulders around, etc. just to keep the
whole assemblage from getting stiff.

I used to get almost cramps in my traps after about
an hour running. I experimented and realized
that i was tipping my head forward. if i held it
more vertical so it balanced by itself, the muscles
didn't get tired so quickly. now i'm good for up to
a couple of hours. after that, i just have to accept
that it's gonna hurt.

the relaxing and shifting of your shoulders and shifting your posture
will surely help.

some folks really do find that using poles helps, it keeps their arms
and upper body active and helps with posture.

It may be worth your time to strengthen the muscles in your upper
back and shoulders. If you're able, a few moves with a very
moderate amount of weight, might be all you need.
