Post subject: Advice on affordable home equipment?
Archived from groups: misc>fitness>aerobic (more info?)

Hi all-

I've never posted here before, so please let me know if my question is
wrong for this group!

I just moved up north, and am learning that the winter up here is long
and not very conducive to outside aerobic activity (running, walking,
etc). I am looking into buying some kind of ellipses machine (or even a
treadmill, though I am historically more of an ellipses kind of girl).I
really don't make that much money so I am trying to stay in the
$300-$400 range. I know that's not gonna get me anything top of the
line, but it's what I can afford.

My goal is really just to get a decent cardio workout and get my
heartrate up before I start my free weights routine.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Or am I better off with a jumprope or
something?

Any advice is appreciated.

Best Regards,
Kerry

A jumprope will work just fine. Jumping jacks, squat thrusts, even
running up and down the stairs if you have them - all fine choices.

If you already own a bicycle, you can buy a gadget to use it as a
stationary indoor trainer for well less than your budget and end up with
something that fits you much better than your typical exercise bike.
I've got such a widget on one of my bikes in the basement that cost me
$10 at a garage sale, and I think decent new ones go for $100-200 or so.

Personally, I prefer to warm up with joint mobility exercises because
they warmup the joints and also warmup the muscles. Google "joint
health" or similar, or look at this link http://www.kbnj.com/sj.htm for
the book I used to learn these - you'll also find the book if you Google
its title, "Super Joints".

Sams Club has an elliptical machine in this price range. I don't know
brand or model tho. You may want to check out user ratings for any
machine you're interested in. There are a number of places like
epinions.com on the 'net.

A lot of exercise equipment out there today is not worth anything. I'm
afraid that "junk" is the rule rather than the exception.

Good luck!

The January issue of Consumer Reports had a feature on home fitness
equipment, with product evaluations, etc. You might want to get a hold of it
at the library if it's not still in stores.

I have a NordicTrak elliptical trainer and exercise bike. They're OK, IMO,
(that's more or less what CR had to say about them as well), but not like
the equipment at the gym. Basically, I use them for when I just can make it
to the gym but have a half hour or forty minutes to spare.
