a *plank* is a yoga position, or asana. if you google *sun
salutations* you will see it is the fifth position in that series of
asanas.

it is the form you use to start a pushup----arms straight and
supporting your body and on your toes preferably, not your knees, and
your body, from top of head to heel, perfectly straight like a *plank*
of wood. it is important that you not look up nor down, but keep your
neck in allignment with your body, and also your butt. a lot of people
have their butt sticking up in the air when they first do this asana.

this is a great ab excercise, and the longer you can hold it the better
it is. usually we hold for a count of sixty, because then we do side
planks, which are using one arm, and facing sideways rather than the
floor, with your free upper arm in alignment with your body. try those
for even more fun!
